Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Receives Residential Substance Abuse Funding

Feb. 12, 2026

The state Office of Grants and Research has again awarded the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office $30,000 through its Residential Substance Abuse Grant program.

The funding helps us pursue our mission to treat the disease of addiction in order to reduce crime and improve public safety.

About 80 percent of those booked in the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office are detoxing from drugs or alcohol.

“Addiction fuels most crimes that lead to incarceration,” said Sheriff Donna D. Buckley. “If we are serious about fighting crime, we must fight addiction. When people are incarcerated due to drug and alcohol related behaviors, we must make the most of that time by providing treatment.”

The Sheriff’s Office has two licensed recovery coaches, two licensed drug and alcohol counselors, as well as a full medical and mental health team. Soon most of the people in our care and custody will return to their communities. Helping them find sobriety makes us all safer.

We thank the Healey-Driscoll Administration for supporting programs that truly work.

“Massachusetts is a national leader on reducing recidivism because we invest in evidence-based programs that work,” Governor Maura Healey, stated in her office’s announcement. “By funding and supporting these proven programs for emerging adults, we strengthen public safety in communities across Massachusetts.”
