Pie in the Sky General Manager Teaches Baking to Incarcerated Individuals
Erik Gura of the Wood’s Hole iconic Pie in the Sky Bakery & Café is volunteering his time to teach incarcerated individuals how to bake bread and pastries during a month-long course inside the Barnstable County Correctional Facility.
During the first class on March 3, he taught students how to mix, knead, proof, and bake French bread.
“The students are learning a marketable skill that can help them earn income and rebuild their lives once they are released from jail,” said Sheriff Donna D. Buckley. “It’s one of many vocational opportunities offered by our staff, and many community partnerships, including Cape Cod Community College, Cape Cod Five, the Home Builders Institute, and the Falmouth Public Library.”
“Food is a universal way to bring people together,” said Gura. “There is high demand for professional bakers. The hours are long, the work is hard, but people think it’s magic.”
Gura plans to offer the course again in the fall.
“Erik Gura is one of our amazing volunteers who come into the jail and share their expertise,” Sheriff Buckley said. “He’s a skilled educator and a dedicated professional who cares about his community.”
The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is grateful to both Erik Gura and Pie in the Sky’s parent company, BT Brands, whose generous donation of time and ingredients are “proof” enough that this will be an amazing course.
Members of the public who wish to volunteer to teach justice-involved individuals at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office may express interest to Chief of Inmate Services and Programs Barbara Clarkson at bclarkson@bsheriff.net.
