Barnstable County recruit correction officers graduate next Saturday

BOURNE, Massachusetts – Sixteen recruit correction officers, thirteen men and three women, will graduate next Saturday (June 20th) from the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Correction Officer Academy.

The graduation will be held under a tent outside the Barnstable County Correctional Facility, which is located near the Bourne National Cemetery and also adjacent to the Bourne gate to Joint Base Cape Cod.

The ceremony will begin at 9 AM and last about an hour.  Friends, family members, the media, and interested members of the general public are invited.

Most of the recruits live on Cape and those who don’t hail from Plymouth, Norfolk, or Bristol counties – the three closest to Barnstable.

The seven on-Cape recruits reside in Hyannis, Mashpee, Sandwich (two), South Yarmouth, West Dennis, and West Yarmouth.

The 11-week academy covered report writing, inmate discipline and management, suicide
prevention, legal issues governing correctional facilities, fire safety, first aid, and computer and interpersonal skills.  Practical and hands-on classes included  defensive tactics, qualifying at the gun range, direct supervision of inmates, how to detect and head-off inmate cons, and other topics.
