The Medical Department of the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office is staffed with nurses 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We also employ a physician who holds the title of Medical Director. He coordinates all inmate care, inside and outside the facility. The Medical Director also consults with outside private physicians and hospitals to ensure continuity of care.

Services provided on site include:

  • Routine eye exams

  • Dental care

  • Family planning clinic

  • Infectious disease clinic

  • Emergency medical care and follow-up treatment

  • Medication dispensing and storage

  • Maintenance of medical records

  • Medical treatments

  • HIV counseling, testing and treatment

  • Chronic illness clinics

Medication is provided to inmates on a daily basis.

Transportation is provided to local specialists, Lemeul Shattuck Hospital, the local hospital or medical center if needed.

A mental health provider is available Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on call for emergency consultation. A contract psychiatrist sees patients in consultation for treatment with medication.
