K-9 Unit

The Barnstable County Sheriff’s office has had a K-9 Unit servicing the communities of Cape Cod since 1989. Currently, the unit is comprised of five K-9’s and K-9 Officers. Four out of the five K-9’s are trained for patrol uses, with the fifth K-9 specializing in narcotics.

Each Patrol K-9 attends a sixteen week Patrol Academy. During this sixteen week period, K-9’s learn tracking, criminal apprehension, building searches, crowd control, felony car stops, jail cell extractions, article searching, legal issues and K-9 first aid. Each K-9 team is expected to perform all activities at a very high level. K-9 teams have been called upon to assist local police departments on Cape Cod for B&E’s, armed robberies, home invasions, warrant apprehensions and missing children and elderly.

The K-9 Unit has been responsible for the successful conviction of numerous subjects who may have eluded authorities if not for the high quality of the K-9’s in the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office.
