Deputy Charlie Young and K-9 Partner Morgan |
|||
Deputy Charlie Young is the newest addition to the Barnstable County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit. Charlie was interviewed and chosen to take Joe Galvin’s place, after his promotion to Sergeant. Charlie started with the Sheriff’s Office in July of 1998. Prior to that, he had worked for Loomis Fargo while attending Bridgewater State College where he earned a BS degree in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology. He also received an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice from Dean College . Charlie has had quite a diverse career since he started with the Sheriff’s Office. He spent quite a lot of time in the Shock Unit at the old jail, has worked in Transportation, and had currently been working in Special Operations. None of these assignments changed Charlie’s desire to be part of the K-9 Unit. He is an animal lover and has always been amazed at how police dogs work. He attended K-9 trainings on his own time to make sure that pursuing a job as a canine officer was the right thing for him. Charlie is thrilled with his new partner, Morgan. She’s a 10 month-old black Labrador Retriever who had been turned into the MSPCA in Kingston , MA . Lt. Ballinger received a call from the shelter and after checking her out, he decided she would work well with Charlie. They are both in training for 12-16 weeks at the old prison building in Bridgewater which is used for all kinds of K-9 training. She’s younger than most of the dogs but is extremely smart and very willing to please her partner. When the collar goes on, Morgan knows it’s time to work and that’s when she gets fed. When Charlie and Morgan successfully finish the training, Morgan will be a certified narcotics dog.
