The Barnstable County Farm consists of approximately eighty acres of land that is used primarily for agriculture and horticulture programs. The
farm has been at its present sight for the past fifty years. In 1996,
the Sheriff, County Commissioners and State Representatives ordered
the farm property be used solely for agriculture or conservation for
the next one hundred years. |

Presently, the farm operates five greenhouses, ten acres of vegetables, twelve acres of hay and a two-acre tree farm. The County Farm also houses the automotive maintenance garage. The automotive program instructs inmates on the mechanical maintenance and complete auto body repair including painting of the Sheriff’s Office vehicles and farm equipment. Recently, the automotive instructor initiated a program for the complete restoration of old farm equipment. The program also instructs the inmates on many of the welding jobs required at the House of Correction. |

| The Horticultural Program was developed to train inmates in the planting and growing of flowering plants and vegetables and the basics of operating a retail business. The focus of the training is to instill a sense of work ethic and to encourage a positive self-esteem that comes with growing plants and the knowing that profits from these endeavors are returned to the inmates by way of self-help programs. These programs include, but are not limited to, the procuring of additional drug and alcohol counselors, computers and education programs that would not otherwise be realized. | ||
The Horticulture Program presently consists of seven greenhouses, ten acres of land for the raising of vegetables, two acres for the growing of chrysanthemums and a two-acre tree farm. The majority of vegetables grown are used in the by the kitchen at the jail and house of correction to provide nutritional value to the inmate’s daily diet. Extra vegetables are donated to local food pantries throughout Cape Cod. The Barnstable County Farm is open to the public year-round from 8:00 AM to 2:00 PM except for major holidays. In October, we invite the public to come and pick their own pumpkins from our pumpkin patch! Groups
can make appointments for farm tours by calling the Sheriff’s
Office at 508-375-6230. Please come out and see us!!! |
