Marine Unit
The Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit is responsible for the operations of S300, our 31’ SAFE Boat Patrol Boat which was acquired through a federal grant in 2016. The primary mission of the unit is to provide a quick response resource when called upon. Members of the Marine Special Response Team and Boat Assault Team receive specialized training in boarding ships at sea while underway in addition to their standard SRT training. The unit regularly patrols the waters of Nantucket and Vineyard Sound while remaining available for deployment anywhere within the County.
The BCSO Marine Unit, in collaboration with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies, provides another level of security for the waters off our Cape Cod coastline. With a complete communications package and up-to-date marine electronics, S300 is capable of meeting the most demanding mission requirements of a boat of her size and capacity. Dual 300 HP 4-Stroke Yamaha engines ensure reliable operation and provide rapid response capability. At the crew’s disposal are dual 12” multi-function displays for navigational, radar, sidevision sonar, downvision sonar, FLIR thermal infra-red, lowlight/daylight video, AIS and engine information. The boat is also equipped to detect radiological and nuclear material being surreptitiously transported aboard potentially hostile boats. The Thermo Scientific™ FHT1377 GN-2 Packeye is the latest in radiation detection equipment for effectively addressing the problems of orphaned sources, radiation detection and sources for malicious intent.
Ready for day or night operations, S300 has been configured for operations in all conditions, year round. Docked in Falmouth, S300 works closely with a number of agencies including Homeland Security and the United States Coast Guard as well as our local police, fire and marine agencies. With growing concern for security off our coastline, the BCSO’s Marine Unit is always at the ready to be deployed if needed.
